Born on 24th May 1819, the future Queen-Empress was christened Alexandrina Victoria; her names having been grudgingly decided upon at the ceremony by the Prince Regent. Little 'Drina' was the product of the race to provide for a legitimate heir in the generation of the ailing King George III's grandchildren, left void after the death of the Prince Regent's daughter, Charlotte Augusta, in childbirth in 1817.
As Hanover was ruled by Salic Law, preventing a woman from ascending the Throne there, the German lands passed eventually on to Victoria's uncle, Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, and the British Throne was passed on to her. Therefore, the Hanoverian Arms were dropped from the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom, which have remained the same since, subject only to artistic preference.
